Tips For Maintaining Mature Gardens

Mature gardens typically have a variety of perennial plants, deep-rooted bushes and large trees that require care and attention over the course of the year. While they are often beautiful to look at, mature gardens often require a significant investment of time to maintain them in such a way that will ensure plants and trees remain healthy and looking their best. We started this blog to share what we feel are the best tips for maintaining a mature garden without giving up all your free time or spending a lot of money on gardening equipment. Our posts cover a variety of topics, such as how and when to prune fruit trees and why mulching flower beds can save you time and work during the summer months. We hope you enjoy our blog.

The Natural Stone Feature You Should Consider For Your Garden

Landscaping is something that many Australians take part in at varying levels, from those who do it professionally to the person who sets up their yard once and leaves it for years. Wherever you fall on that spectrum there are similar questions that all encounter, with the prime one being: how do I make a unique garden that isn't too overbearing? This is the eternal question that seemingly has a different answer every year. However, there are some foundational features that look good perpetually while trends come and go around them, and one of these is the humble travertine stone.

Why Travertine Stone?

There are many different types of stones that are popular in gardens, so what makes travertine stone so special? Well, there are a couple of reasons, including the following:

  • It comes in many different varieties of colour; while all have interesting patterns, that means no two sections are exactly alike.
  • A long history (even the Romans used it!) of being used as a construction material gives travertine stone an intangible, unique quality.
  • It is very affordable when compared to higher-tier options while still looking far more luxurious than the more mass-produced stones.

Is Travertine Stone Able To Be Used As Pavers?

Travertine stone can be used in almost any capacity in which other popular building materials can be used. It is strong enough to form a retaining wall but not so strong that it can't be formed into pavers as well. It is a popular choice for the flooring of outdoor living spaces, as well as dividing walls to separate different areas of the garden. While it is part of the limestone subsection of sedimentary rock it does not crumble or age easily while exposed to the elements. On the contrary, travertine is one of the hardiest of all limestone rocks and can therefore be used for nearly anything you might have planned.

How Can I Get My Travertine Stone Customised?

There are a lot of landscaping companies that provide custom delivery of travertine stone to fit your needs. If that route fails, then go to a travertine stone wholesaler and then link up with a nearby stonemason (yes, they still exist) and work with them on your design. This will only really be necessary for artistic features, however, as for most practical uses (pavers, retaining walls, flooring, pillars, fencing, etc.) there are options to buy pre-made travertine. That is not to dissuade you, as you may want a special design, but always double check that what you want doesn't already exist because that could save you thousands!
